Beyond the Convention, Back to the Mission

Every organization faces moments that test its unity. For many across the Western Conference, the outcome of the last National Convention was one of those moments. Some saw it as losing our turn. Others saw it as a reminder that every election is open to every member. Both views come from pride and passion for the VFW.
But pride doesn’t have to divide us. It reminds us how deeply we care about this organization and the veterans it serves. What makes the Western Conference strong has never been a title, a rotation, or a gavel, it’s the people. The members who show up, volunteer, mentor, recruit, and keep their Posts alive through every challenge.

As we gather in Idaho, we have a choice. We can keep reliving what happened, or we can start focusing on what’s next. We can talk about who we didn’t elect, or we can talk about who we’re helping this week. The VFW’s mission has always been bigger than any single election. It’s about service, honor, and carrying each other when the road gets heavy.
The truth is, every conference - Western, Big Ten, Southern, Eastern - shares the same purpose. We might take different paths, but we all move toward the same goal: ensuring that no veteran is forgotten and no sacrifice is overlooked.
If we want to lead again, it won’t come from anger. It will come from action. From rebuilding trust, mentoring new leaders, and setting the example of what the VFW looks like when we rise above politics and focus on purpose.
So let’s move beyond the convention and back to the mission. Let’s make Idaho a place where respect replaces resentment, and teamwork replaces tension. Let’s remind everyone, including ourselves, that leadership isn’t lost, it’s lived.
Because our story as the Western Conference isn’t finished. It’s just beginning a new chapter.
